The easiest battle to lose is “what could’ve been”. Oh what could’ve been if i chose this career instead of that? If I took this opportunity instead. If I married this person. If I chased my dreams. If I never sold my favourite whatever. What could’ve been if i never quit my job? If I never left my partner? Blah blah blah blah blah .
What could’ve been has EVERYTHING; every alternate possibility. It will go as far as your mind will take it, so it’s always a losing battle. Besides, it’s extremely ignorant.
It’s like watching the best episode of a cancelled show and assuming that’s how every episode would’ve gone if it weren’t cancelled.
Sure, you may have experienced something amazing. Something you feel would’ve lasted forever if not for [insert whatever]. Perhaps you may forever wonder what could’ve been. What if you never left that place, or that person (or they never left you). But it’s dangerous to use one frame to represent the entire picture. There are many terrible journeys that have beautiful parts in isolation. And there comes a time where you have to consider if you’ve already experienced the what could’ve been.
What could’ve been, always exists. There’s a reality where you chose the other option wondering what could’ve been of the life you’re living right now.
It’s done
